Brazil Visa Requirements – Your Questions Answered

Got a trip to Brazil planned but aren’t sure about the Brazilian Visa requirements?  Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place.  At passports and visas.com we’re experts at all things travel and visa.  So to help you as you plan your trip, we’ve put together a list of frequently ask questions to help clear up any potential confusion.

Do you need a visa? Yes, any U.S. citizen traveling to Brazil is required to carry a valid passport and visa.

Can I get a visa on arrival or do I need to obtain my Brazilian Visa in advance?  *Take Note*   There are no visa on arrival services in Brazil.  All visas must be obtained prior to arriving in country.  If you arrive without a valid visa, immigration authorities will refuse you entry to the country.

How long can I stay in Brazil? Tourist visas are usually multiple entry visas good for  a total of a 90 day stay.  The visas are generally valid for a period of six months.

What  do I need to apply? You’ll need a valid US passport with at least six months of validity remaining as well as a standard passport photograph.  You’ll also need a proof of address, such as a driver’s license or utility bill.  For a full list of requirements just click here.

Are there any strange requirements I should be aware of?

  • If Entering Brazil by Air: Before you can apply for your visa, you’ll need a copy of your itinerary or a letter signed by a travel agent.  The itinerary or letter should include your flight numbers and proof of payment.
  • By Sea: If entering Brazil by sea you’ll need to submit the official receipt or boarding pass from your cruise line.  You’ll also need to be able to show that the pass has been paid for in full.
  • By Land: If entering Brazil by land you’ll need proof of your ticket flight out of the region, including proof that the ticket has been paid for in full.  If you plan to exit by land, you’ll need to write a letter addressed to the “Consulate of Brazil” detailing exactly how and when you plan to leave Brazil.  You may also be requested to present a copy of your most recent bank statement.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination: If you have visited any of the designated Yellow Fever Countries, you may be required to submit a proof of vaccination before you’ll be granted a visa.
