Emergency Passport Checklist in 2022

Consider other factors and see if you need a passport. If you have to travel to countries including Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, or Bermuda, US passport cards can be used instead of a passport. The passport card is however limited to only land and seaport entry. Air travel is not permitted with a passport card and you must have your passport book in hand. It is also not valid in other countries besides the ones listed above.

What exactly is an Emergency Passport?

An emergency passport is defined as the urgent need for a new passport, passport renewal, or other passport services as a result of an emergency situation. Passportsandvisas defines these situations as serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family that necessitates travel outside the United States within 72 hours (3 business days). When applying for an emergency passport, you must provide a reason that is life or death. If your reason does not persuade the Department of State, you will be unable to apply for an emergency passport. If you do not need a passport in less than 72 hours, you must go through a different application process (3 business days).

How can I obtain an emergency passport?

You can apply for an emergency passport in two ways. First, depending on how quickly you need your emergency passport, you can apply directly through a private passport agency like 24 Hour Passport and Visas.

You can obtain an emergency passport by using the popular links on the passport and visas website or by calling to schedule an appointment. When applying, make sure to include the following documents:

• The correct passport application form (new passport, passport renewal, lost/stolen, or other passport services), along with all supporting documentation.
• Evidence of a life-or-death emergency (death certificate, a statement from a mortuary, or a signed letter from a hospital or medical professional). If the document is not translated into English, it will not be accepted and may result in the rejection of the emergency passport application.
• A copy of your itinerary.
