Do I need a visa for India?
Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter India, and eligible travellers can apply online for an eVisa instead of visiting an embassy. Travelling on a US passport, you do need an India visa — the options available to you are 30-Day e-Tourist Visa, 1-Year e-Tourist Visa, 5-Year e-Tourist Visa.
India offers visa on arrival to citizens of Japan, South Korea and the UAE only. Every other nationality must hold a visa before boarding.
Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan do not need a visa for India. Holders of a valid OCI or PIO card do not need a visa either — the card itself is the travel authorisation.
All travellers arriving by air must also complete the India e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours of landing. It is not a visa and does not replace one — you still need your visa separately.

India asks travellers to apply at least 4 days before arrival. Government processing usually takes 3–4 days, but governments do not guarantee a decision date, so apply as early as you can — applications are accepted well ahead of travel.
