Do I need a visa to visit Mongolia for tourism?

It depends on your nationality. Citizens of 34 listed countries (mostly European, plus Australia and New Zealand) and a further group of countries with standing bilateral agreements can enter visa-free for a set number of days; everyone else needs to apply online for a Tourist e-Visa (K2) before travelling.

How long can I stay in Mongolia without a visa?

Most visa-exempt nationalities can stay up to 30 days; a smaller group (including the United States, Kazakhstan and several others) can stay up to 90 days, and Philippine passport holders can stay up to 21 days.

What is the Mongolia e-Visa and who needs it?

The e-Visa is an online Electronic Travel Authorization issued by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia for citizens of eligible countries who are not on the visa-free list, letting them apply for a Tourist (K2), cultural/sports (K4) or transit (K6) visa without visiting an embassy.

Is the Mongolia e-Visa single or multiple entry?

The Tourist e-Visa (K2) is single entry only, and it cannot be extended or converted into another visa category once issued.

How long does it take to get a Mongolia e-Visa?

Applications are processed within 3 working days (72 hours) of submission and payment.

Can I extend my stay in Mongolia beyond 30 days?

If you entered visa-free or on a regular tourist visa, you can apply once for a 30-day extension at the Immigration Agency in Mongolia (in person or online), provided you apply before your current permitted stay expires. The e-Visa itself is non-extendable.

Do I need to register with immigration if I stay longer than 30 days?

Yes. Any foreign visitor staying more than 30 days must register with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within 7 days of arrival.

What passport validity is required to enter Mongolia?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months (180 days) from your date of travel to apply for or use a Mongolian e-Visa.

Which Mongolian visa types can I apply for online?

Citizens of e-Visa eligible countries can apply online for three categories: K2 (tourist, up to 30 days), K4 (participants in sports, cultural or arts events, or filming), and K6 (transit, up to 10 days).

Visa Policy

Mongolia Visa Policy for US Citizens

The visa-free arrangement between United States and Mongolia reflects a long-standing bilateral travel agreement. US passport holders benefit from one of the most favorable entry policies available — no advance application, no government fee, and no waiting period. This policy applies to tourism, family visits, and short-term business trips. Stays for employment, study, or residency require a separate permit obtained before travel. The visa-free allowance of 30 days is per visit, and immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate you have not exceeded cumulative stay limits during any 180-day period.

It is important to note that visa-free entry does not guarantee admission — Mongolia immigration officers retain the right to deny entry to any traveler. US citizens should carry documentation of their travel purpose, accommodation details, and sufficient funds. Travelers with prior immigration violations, either in Mongolia or other countries, may face additional scrutiny at the border.

Travel Context

Traveling to Mongolia from United States — What to Know Before You Go

Planning a trip to Mongolia from United States involves a few key logistics beyond the visa. Direct flights are available from major United States hubs to Mongolia's main international airports, with flight times varying depending on your departure city. We recommend booking refundable tickets until your travel documents are confirmed — PassportsAndVisas.com's service fee is charged only after visa approval, so you are not committed financially before your visa is confirmed.

Passport preparation is the most important step. Your United States passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining beyond your departure date from Mongolia, and at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps. If your passport is expiring soon, PassportsAndVisas.com can expedite United States passport renewal — often faster than standard government processing times.

As a visa-free traveler, your main pre-departure checklist includes: valid passport, travel insurance, accommodation confirmation, and proof of return travel. Mongolia immigration officers appreciate organized travelers — having these documents accessible (not buried in luggage) can speed up your arrival process significantly.
