Question 1

Can I enter China without a visa?

Accepted Answer

Visa-free entry to mainland China comes from two routes: China's own unilateral policy and mutual visa-exemption agreements with other countries. Together they cover 78 countries. Both are for short trips such as tourism, business or family visits. Work, study and longer stays still need a visa. If your passport isn't covered, you may be able to use the 240-hour visa-free transit when flying on to a third country through a designated port, though not for a trip to China alone. Otherwise you'll need a Tourist Visa (L), which PassportsAndVisas.com can help you apply for.

Question 2

Do US citizens need a visa for China in 2026?

Accepted Answer

For a standalone holiday, US passport holders need a visa from an embassy or consulate. They apply through the Chinese embassy or consulate covering the state where they live: fill in the online application, then hand in the passport in person or through an agent. The government fee for US citizens is $140. There is one visa-free option: if you're flying through China to a third country with a confirmed onward ticket, you can use the transit visa-free policy at designated ports. It can't be used for a trip where China is your only destination. Everyone also completes China's Arrival Card. PassportsAndVisas.com can prepare and submit your tourist visa application.

Question 3

Is China still visa-free in 2026?

Accepted Answer

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the extension in November 2025 and added Sweden to the unilateral list from 10 November 2025. Ordinary passport holders from covered countries can come without a visa for business, tourism, visiting family and friends, exchange visits or transit. Some other passports are visa-free under bilateral mutual agreements instead, and those agreements aren't tied to the end-2026 date. Your passport currently needs a visa from an embassy or consulate for most passports for a tourist trip. Anyone who doesn't qualify must get a visa before arriving, and it's worth watching for any announcement about what follows 2026.

Question 4

Do Indonesian citizens need a visa to visit China?

Accepted Answer

There are two exceptions worth knowing. Since 12 June 2025, Indonesians can use China's 240-hour visa-free transit if they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and enter through a designated port, staying within the permitted area. Indonesian ordinary passports are also on China's visa-free list for short trips to Hainan Island only. For any other trip, get a Tourist Visa (L) before you travel. The government fee is $140, and PassportsAndVisas.com can help you with the application.

Question 5

Do Canadians need a visa for China?

Accepted Answer

Canadian travelers need no visa, just a valid passport for a short visit. Canada is on China's unilateral visa-exemption list, which covers tourism, business, visiting family and friends, exchange visits and transit. Your stay is counted from midnight after the day you arrive. The policy currently runs until 31 December 2026. For a longer stay, or to work, study or report as a journalist, you need the right visa before you travel. Canadians can also use China's 240-hour visa-free transit. Either way, you still need to complete the China Arrival Card and carry a passport that's valid for your whole trip.

Question 6

Do British citizens need a visa for China?

Accepted Answer

The United Kingdom is on China's one-sided visa-free list, which covers ordinary passports only. In short, British travelers need no visa, just a valid passport for China. Your visa-free stay is counted from midnight after the day you arrive, so plan your exit date with that in mind. If you're going for a reason outside those purposes, such as work or study, or want to stay longer, get the right visa before you go. Every visitor should also complete China's Arrival Card, either online before the flight or on arrival. The visa-free scheme is a policy with an end date, not a treaty, so check the latest position shortly before you book.

Question 7

Do Australians need a tourist visa to visit China?

Accepted Answer

Australia and New Zealand are the two Oceania countries on China's one-sided visa-free list, so Australians need no visa, just a valid passport for a holiday in China. The scheme covers ordinary passports only. Your stay is counted from midnight after the day you arrive. If you plan to stay longer, or to work or study, apply for the right visa before you leave. Before landing, fill in China's Arrival Card online. If you couldn't do it in advance, you can complete it at the airport. Because visa-free entry is a policy with a set end date, check again shortly before you travel.

Question 8

Do Indian citizens need a visa for China, or is it visa-free?

Accepted Answer

Indian applicants go through the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in India. The process starts with an online application and supporting documents. The visa fee for Indian passport holders is $140. The Chinese missions in India have kept a reduced fee scale until 31 December 2026, and express or urgent service costs extra. Once your file is complete, processing usually takes about 4 days. Remember the China Arrival Card as well, which every visitor completes before or on arrival. PassportsAndVisas.com can prepare your application and documents so nothing is missed.

Question 9

Can US citizens travel to China right now?

Accepted Answer

China is open to American visitors, but the United States is not on China's unilateral visa-free list, so a round trip from the US needs a Tourist Visa (L) arranged before you fly. As of October 2026, the US State Department rates mainland China Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", and has added a wrongful-detention warning, so read the latest advisory before booking. Any valid US passport works. You'll also fill in China's Arrival Card before landing. If you're flying on to a third country, the 240-hour visa-free transit may let you skip the visa altogether.

Question 10

Can US residents or green card holders travel to China without a visa?

Accepted Answer

China's visa-free and transit schemes are based on nationality, so a US green card or US residence alone won't get you into China without a visa. With your passport, you need a visa from an embassy or consulate for most passports for a tourist trip to China. If you do need a visa and live in the US, you can apply through the Chinese visa office that covers your state. Applicants who aren't US citizens upload a copy of their green card, US visa, I-20 or I-94 to show they live in the US legally. PassportsAndVisas.com can handle the visa application for you.
