2 primary rules for foreigners who are going to visit Russia:

  2. You must enter Russia by airplane and only from the region of your country.

There are specific categories of citizens who can enter Russia from other countries.

These categories are:

  • Diplomats and their family members
  • Highly qualified specialists
  • Captains, drivers, and pilots of international flights
  • Foreign citizens who are family members of Russian citizens
  • Citizens who have to care for their next of kin (e.g., mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, and children)
  • Citizens who contain a residence permit for Russia
  • Migrants participating in the government program
  • Citizens coming for medical treatment (the Ministry of Health must provide the documents);
  • Citizens arriving due to the death of a close relative
  • Citizens of Baikonur and employees of companies engaged in the space industry.

What documents are required to enter Russia?

Below is the list of documents that you must have while entering Russia:

  • Tickets.
  • A valid passport for six months from the date of arrival in Russia.
  • Present it to customs. You should not make it earlier than three days before departure. You don't have to stay in quarantine if your reports are negative.
  • Application form for those flying to the Russian Federation to cross the border. It must be completed before entering Russia.
  • If you are a citizen of visa-free countries for Russia, you must apply for it at the nearby Visa Application Center in your country.
  • Visa Application Form.
  • Medical insurance (Russian abbreviation DMS).
  • Proof of residence. Required for the citizens who are not eligible for visa-free entry to Russia.

Things you need to consider before your trip to Russia:

You must be tested for COVID-19 three days before you enter Russia. Express tests are the quickest way to get a test result. However, keep in mind that they may be more expensive. The certificate must be issued in Russian or English. You can request a Russian translation at the clinic.

If you have signs of fever or other symptoms of illness, you might be asked to repeat the test on arrival. Put some money aside for this purpose. The average cost of the test is 3,000 rubles (about 34 EUR). If the result is positive, you must stay for treatment.
