A Guide to Planning the Pefect Honeymoon

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Your honeymoon is perhaps the most important vacation of your life, and for that reason you will want everything to go perfectly. But sometimes with all the excitement of your wedding, you can forget a few crucial details when it comes to planning your honeymoon, including making sure your passport is valid and obtaining the correct travel visa.

Here’s a brief guide to planning your honeymoon to ensure that the best vacation of your life goes off smoothly.

Start Early

Although you are spending lots of time planning the wedding party, make sure you put some time aside early on to choose your destination and decide on the type of honeymoon you want. Are you looking for a 5-star resort or to go camping in the country? Choose your dream destination early on so you can start preparing properly.

The Essentials

Certain country’s have specific visa requirements for your entry, so always make sure you sort these out early on. The same is true of your passport – always check that it will be valid for your trip. Some countries require that you have six months left on your passport before entry into the country, and this can sometimes be a problem if you have not considered it until the last minute.

You can always go with a specialist passport office if you do discover a problem at the last minute, but it’s best to arrange a new passport, passport renewal, or visa well in advance, especially as you will busy with the wedding nearer the time.

Budget Early

There is always the tendency with honeymoons to splash out, and why not? This is a once-in-a-lifetime event after all. But just be careful and make sure you have enough to make it into the vacation you are hoping for because you don’t want to start your married life in debt.

Plan What To See & Do

Landing in a new country and discovering what to do all makes for a great adventure, but it’s a good idea to plan some of the things you will be doing in advance. There is a mountain of information online, or you could visit your travel agent for some more ideas. You don’t want to miss out on the best things when you’re away only to realize when you return home.

Enjoy Your Special Status

As a honeymoon is such a special event, there are lots of special offers out there to take advantage of. Always look for special deals on flights and hotels, as you may be surprised what you find.

Last Checks

Always recheck everything nearer the time to make sure that it is in order. This is the time to check your flight details, passport, and visa to make certain that everything is valid. Try to do this at least two days before traveling because if you realize that your passport is going to go out of date or you can’t find it you will still be able to use an expedited passport service to arrange a rush passport, as well as sorting out any last-minute visa requirements.

Changing the Name in your Passport after Getting Married

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe—wherever you head on your honeymoon, planning this special trip is one of the highlights of the wedding preparations. But with all the excitement of the trip, and all the other considerations when planning the wedding, it’s very easy to forget about the essentials.

One thing that many people forget to consider until the last moment is whether changing their name after they get married will affect their honeymoon travel arrangements. This can result in a huge panic that no one needs on their wedding day, so what exactly are the correct procedures?

Wait Until After the Honeymoon

The general advice is not to worry about anything to do with your new name until after you get home from your honeymoon. In order to change your name, you need to show your marriage license. This is only given to you just before the wedding, which means you would have to change your name and get a new passport before traveling on your honeymoon, which for many people simply isn’t feasible.

On top of that, you would have to change your name in your plane tickets as well, for which an extra charge would be required.

Your names on your travel ticket must match the name in your passport in order to be valid. So unless you want to delay your honeymoon until after you have changed your name then it is much better to just wait and do it all together at a later date.

Applying for a Passport Name Change

If you apply for a name change on your passport through the US State Department, there are different rules regarding this process. If your passport is less than a year old, you can change the name in your passport for free after it has been legally changed. You will need to send in your current passport, the marriage certificate or a certified copy, and Form DS-5504.

If you applied for your passport over a year ago, you will need to send the same documentation as above, but rather than Form DS-5504 you will need to send Form DS-82 instead. In this case a fee will apply.
