3 Attractions for First-Timers in Mexico

Most Americans travel to the neighboring country of Mexico for some fun in the sun and/or simply because it is relatively inexpensive and has a convenient location.  However, I think the best reasons to travel there are its vibrant culture and friendly people.  No matter which city you choose to vacation in, you are guaranteed to encounter a culture that is rich with history and meaning, as well as locals who are generously willing to share all aspects of it with you.

First Time in Mexico

Because it is such a large country it can be difficult to know which cities you should travel to.  I have 3 suggestions for first-timers, as well as for those who are looking for a new city to try.

Mexico City: Unfortunately, this capitol city has an unfair reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities.  While crime does exist there, as it does in all large cities, I can assure you that if you make smart decisions you will have no problems.  This grand city of more than 20 million people is the cultural, political, and financial nerve center of the country.  The collection of museums, cafes, boutiques, and art studios all help to create a charming ambiance.  Also, in less than an hour’s drive you can explore some of the world’s largest pyramids in the ancient city of Teotihuacan.  I promise you this is an unforgettable destination that will certainly capture you heart! 

Tulum: Cancun’s often overlooked sister city, Tulum, offers everything Cancun does, except the throngs of tourists.  There you will discover some of the most luxurious spas, restaurants, and beaches.  Do not forget to visit nearby Chichen Itza, one of the 7 Wonders of the World, for an awe-inspiring experience.

Ensenada: This quaint sea-side village 2 hours south of San Diego is a hidden Mexican gem.  It is an easy drive along Highway 1 with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean.  You can make stops along the way in notorious Tijuana and Rosarita where you can take relaxing mud baths.  I consider this to be the perfect weekend get-a-way, since you will find 4-star accommodations for unbeatable prices, unique handicrafts in the markets, and the freshest seafood around.

First Trip to Brazil

With the recent announcements that the 2016 Olympic Games and 2014 FIFA World Cup would be hosted by Brazil, the largest country in South America is now being propelled into the spotlight as one of the top travel destinations for this new decade.  While these major sports attractions are historical events in themselves, Brazil happens to be one of the most diverse places on the planet offering its visitors a glorious coastline, bustling metropolitan cities, and a tropical rainforest that promises adventures abound. 

For your first trip to Brazil, it is wise to sample a little of all the country has to offer.  Once you have completed your trip and you have discovered what you love best, you will then know where to further explore when you return in the future (and I can promise you that you will return).  I recently visited Brazil myself and followed an itinerary that I highly recommend.  I can confidently say that I experienced the real Brazil and was of course left wanting more.

I started my 10-day trip in the northern sea-side village of Porto de Galinhas.  Porto is about a 1 hour car ride away from Recife, the city you must fly into in order to get to Porto.  It is known for its awesome reefs and breathtaking beaches.

For scuba diving and/or snorkeling enthusiasts, there are many dive shops in the center of town.  There is no need to book in advance, just show up and they will book your water activities that same day.

As for the beaches, well, no matter which one you chose you can be certain that you will never want to leave!  One of the reasons why so many Brazilians choose to vacation in Porto is that the beaches are more secluded than others in the country, allowing for true relaxation.

After Porto, I returned to civilization in the famed city of Rio de Janeiro.  I was there wearing my white dress for the extraordinary New Year’s Eve fireworks show on Copacabana Beach.  I strongly suggest you plan your trip either around New Year’s Eve or Carnival, because these celebrations are experiences of a lifetime.  Take note that arrangements should be made at least 6 months in advance for these holidays.

Cidade Maravilhosa, or Marvelous City, as Rio is affectionately called by the locals, is one of the most beloved cities throughout the world, and it will not take you but 5 minutes after arriving to understand why.  Besides the fact that it is simply picturesque, the city offers a multitude of activities; from making the pilgrimage to the top of Corcovado Mountain to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer (1 of the 7 Wonders of the World) to touring one of the notorious favelas to taking in a soccer game in Maracana the world’s largest stadium to sunbathing on sands of Ipanema Beach.

Each day I was there was filled with one joyous adventure after another.  Although I struggled to decide what activities I could fit into my busy schedule, I always made sure that I found time to enjoy a caipirinha or two. 

My final stop on my trip was to Manaus, the gateway into the Amazon.  From Manaus, I boarded a boat which led me up the Amazon River deeper into the jungle.  I stayed in an eco-lodge, however depending on your preference there are ways to see the Amazon on all budgets.

 

On the daily excursions I was introduced to the native flora and fauna.  The indigenous people that you will most likely encounter on you tours will take delight in showing off their “pets,” which will include animals such as sloths, monkeys, and crocodiles.  I was even brave enough to wear an anaconda around my neck when I was presented with one.

At night as we would float down the river in our canoes I really did have to pinch myself a couple of times.  Between the intense starry sky and the sound of the animals singing, it felt completely surreal.  What a perfect ending to a perfect trip!

There are lots of amazing pagodas to visit in Saigon, but this is one of the best. Its lavish decorations are a sight to behold, and twice a year it hosts amazing festivities for the native Chinese people of the city, so if you’re lucky enough to be around you’ll be able to witness a spectacular show.

Cho Lon

Everyone likes to visit the local Chinatown during a trip to a new city, and Saigon is no exception. Cho Lon is so big and packed full of interesting features that you could easily spend a whole day here. It is a very old part of the city, and you should certainly check out Binh Tay Market which will be a real sensory overload with all the exotic goods on offer.

You can hike all the way to the top where you will be treated to some truly incredible views of the rainforest below. This is not your average beach activity, so come prepared, but the reward at the top will be worth it.

 

3. Follow in Bob Marley’s Footsteps, Jamaica

Any fan of Bob Marley should not miss this opportunity to visit all of the most important places in the reggae legend’s life. Places that tourists can visit include his birthplace, Mt Zion Rock, and Nine Mile Village. You’ll also receive an education about the Rastafarian religion along the way.

 

4. Take a Ride on a Gondola, Dominica

This is one of the best things you can do as a tourist during your trip to the Caribbean. Located at Morne Trois Pitons National Park, you can enjoy a half-hour ride on a hanging gondola traveling over the top of the rainforest. You’ll get an unrivalled view of the canopy below and an experienced guide to explain all the things that you will see.

History of the Great Wall

The Great Wall of China was first built in the 7th century BC as a protective barrier along the northern border of the country, and work continued on it right up until the 16th century. It stretches for over 5,000 miles all the way from Shangaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west. Despite the popular belief that it can be viewed from space, there has never actually been any proof of this.

Badaling is by far the most popular spot to visit the Great Wall. Located very near to Beijing, the area is easily accessible and the wall has also been restored. All of this means there are more tourists here than at most other locations.

If you want to get further away from the tourist hoards then you could head to Mutianyu. This is about an hour from Beijing, and is therefore less busy. The wall is about 1.4 miles long here, and you can go up to the top in a cable car.

Further still is Simatai, about 2.5 hours from Beijing. Here you will find some impressive watchtowers, and it is also the starting point for the 7.5 mile trek to Jinshanling. It is hard going but is definitely one of the best ways to see the wall.

The Forbidden City: Biggest Palace in the World
